COST 634 'On- and Off-site Environmental Impacts of Runoff and Erosion'

• Working Group 1: 'Policy issues in the implementation of sustainable land use'
• Working Group 2: 'Sustainable Farm-Scale Management'
• Working Group 3: 'Catchment integration of On- and Off-site effects'

Objectives and scope

The main objective of the Action is to develop an integrated understanding of on- and off-site impacts of soil erosion at the catchment scale. This requires the development of tools as well as methodologies to support decision making for the sustainable management of erosion-sensitive areas at the farm level, including the implementation of soil protection measures.

This is an opportunity to influence the direction of European research on the impact of runoff and erosion. Please look at the technical annexe for this COST action.

This sets out the broad aims for participants of the action, but the particular objective of our first meeting is to define the particular focus of our meetings over the next four years, and the themes of the publications that we expect to follow from them. COST supports attendance at meetings, and not research directly, but provides a forum to network with potential partners across Europe, and so can prove a springboard to research applications.

The 1^st day of the meeting concerns the 'Policy issues in the implementation of sustainable land use', through national contributions. The objective is to give an overview on conservation policy and practice (i.e. what is happening in the diffrent countries). The 2^nd and the 3^rd day will be devoted to discussions in Working Groups, introduced by Key Note papers, and plenary session.

Participants will have the possibility to present posters or other documents. If you would like to make a brief (5 minute) contribution to the discussion of our future priorities, please inform Anne-Véronique Auzet and your national COST634 representative. There is support for a number of delegates (maximum 4 per country) to the conference

Please send the registration form to local organisers. (poltarska@vupu.sk, skalsky@vupu.sk or bujnovsky@vupu.sk, at latest before August, 15^th, 2004

Registration fee is 100 € before August 30^th, and 110 € after. It includes meals (ice-breaker reception, breakfast, lunch and diner on 8.-9th October and breakfast and lunch on the 10^th October, two refreshment breaks per a day during the meeting on October 8 -10 as well as a notebook and a pen).

Accommodation

60 double rooms are preliminary reserved in Congress hotel SUZA. Price per double room is around 30 EUR+ 0,4 € per day as payment to local municipality. Breakfast is not included in the room price - therefore it will be included into the registration fee.

Individual reservations must be realised before September (because possible penalties for non occupied booked rooms executed by SSCRI in June).

Additional 15 single rooms are preliminary reserved in another location Congress and education centre hotel on Bardošová street 33, 833 12 Bratislava (25 € per room/night) + 0,4 € /person/day (payment for local municipality)

Friday, 8^th October plenary session organised by WG1 on national policy initiatives across scales; national contribution: 15' each

Saturday, 9^th October, am: 6 keynote papers, 2 for each WG to provoke discussions

Saturday, 9^th October, pm WG discussions: What should be the future work of the working group; foster research in topics where substantial progress can be made ?

Saturday, 9^th October, evening: steering committee meeting

Sunday, 10th October, am: plenary session: report back from discussion WG sessions and general discussion

Sunday, 10th October, pm: MC meeting, further meetings
